Everyone on social media has been talking about recession indicators lately–from pop song releases to maxi skirts. But there’s a food trend that hasn’t been getting as much attention: “little treats”.
The “little treat” culture is the idea of spending on everyday luxuries instead of bigger purchases due to rising living costs. Gourmet sandwiches, matcha lattes, coffee runs, and immersive food experiences are just some of the common examples of “treats” that the average consumer in Metro Manila might be spending on.
And we get it: it’s totally okay to indulge in these small treats every once in a while to celebrate your wins, no matter how small. So if you’re looking for a sign, this is it. Treat yourself to your favorite cafe, or see our curated list of indulgent spots below.
Ailo Coffee
San Juan’s newest coffee spot might just be your next weekend cafe-hopping destination. Ailo Coffee is cozy and inviting, which may be due to the fact that it’s a house-turned-cafe. Their espresso-based drinks are deliciously crafted, and their Iced Matcha Latte (P220) might be our favorite in the area.

Speaking of matcha, everyone’s favorite NYC dessert spot now offers their signature Banana Pudding in a matcha flavor. M. Bakery Cafe’s newest menu offering is the perfect treat for sweet tooths and matcha fans alike. Don’t put it off for too long, though, because this limited-edition flavor is only available until June 30.
📍 Multiple Branches
717 Deli

This small deli is loved by all San Juan locals, and for good reason: they serve some of Metro Manila’s best sandwiches, packed with flavor and premium ingredients. If you’re looking to treat yourself (and maybe a friend) with a hearty bite, try out their Mortadella Sandwich (P400) or their Roast Beef Melt (550). And, so we hear, they have the best Fish and Chips (P750) around too.

Oto

Sometimes, you just need a good drink with your friends. Oto is tucked away inside the bustling nightlife scene of Poblacion, but it’s a spot you cannot miss. They serve a good selection of classic drinks and fun, thoughtfully-crafted cocktails. Talk about a good week-ender.

Nothing says “little treat” more than a decadent cookie. You might see them in pop-ups and weekend markets, but The Kind Cookie also has a brick-and-mortar store in Salcedo, Makati. Everyone has their own favorites from their wide selection of flavors, but our personal pick? The Lemon Circle (P140).

So yes, the “little treats” do matter–and you don’t have to feel ashamed of them. Sometimes, it’s what gets us through the tough times.
